The Sacramento Kings have extended a qualifying offer to Jason Thompson to make the forward a restricted free agent.

Kings President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie officially announced the long-expected move Monday. The tender allows Sacramento to match any offer Thompson receives when free agency begins July 1.

Thompson averaged 9.1 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.2 assists playing mostly off the bench last season. He was selected by the Kings with the 12th overall pick in the 2008 draft.

Sacramento owns the fifth overall pick in Thursday night's draft.

Sacramento Kings - Page 8 2012TRobRookieIntro1

Kings President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie

“Let me start off and welcome everybody. We really appreciate everyone coming out to be here on another exciting day for the Kings as we welcome a terrific young man. I want to apologize for the slight delay in getting started. Not nearly as bad as the three-hour delay Thomas had getting in here last night. But I just want to start off by saying that it gives me a great deal of pleasure to introduce Thomas Robinson as the newest member of the Kings. He comes to us from Kansas, which I think everyone knows he had an exceptional career and really an outstanding and almost incredible junior year, where he led his team to the finals in the NCAA Tournament, where he had 18 points and 17 rebounds. He is a very active player, a great rebounder. He has endured personal tragedy and still competed at the highest levels of the game in which he’s played. I think (Kansas Head Coach) Bill Self said it best. He said, ‘He’s been remarkably balanced in an unbalanced situation.’ That’s a credit to his character. He’s not only going to bring a lot of energy in the game to the Kings. I think he’ll be a great teammate, and we’re all looking forward to watching him play.”

Kings Head Coach Keith Smart

“I’m excited. As the Draft started to unfold, we saw this young man pretty much getting ready to pack his bags and come to Sacramento. Everything we talked about with our team and how we’re trying to build and get this team moving in the right direction and the words and the comments that he made on that stage really resonated with me as far as, ‘I’m going to work.’ And that’s what we’ve been trying to preach to all our guys. But we have a great young man – first and foremost a guy who’s, you know his accolades as a player, a warrior on the floor, but really a humble warrior and focused on the team concept – so I’m excited. As I talked to him on Draft Night, when we met in Chicago, and everything about him just resonated with me – that we have the right people, the right situation here for him to grow him and continue his growth as a player to continue his growth as a person, knowing that he has the right people to be in his life at this particular time. I’m grateful as a coach to have the chance to sit here as we introduce him to Sacramento and our fans, but to our media as well. I’m excited. When I talked with him on the phone, I kind of became a little emotional because our spirits connected.”

Will Robinson have the chance to start next season? What part of his game does he need to work on?

“He’s going to polish up his low-post game. He’s going to understand playing off the elbows, things like that. His pick-and-pop jumpshots are going to get a little better. He’s a worker, so whatever you put in front of him, he’s going to try to execute. But I think Day 1, we just start letting him have his enjoyment with everything going on here – his enjoyment of trying to play and playing in Summer League. Enjoy that time there, and as we continue to talk to him throughout Summer League and throughout the first portion of the preseason, he’ll be ready to play for us.”

What is the biggest thing you will ask of him next season?

“Just be who you are right now. You’ll figure out the NBA. I don’t have to ask him to play hard – that’s already a part of him. I think sometimes if you say, ‘Do this,’ or, ‘We want this from you,’ you get him thinking too much. A rookie’s going to come in with so many thoughts and everything he needs to do. I say, ‘Just go out and play. Play your game right now,’ and then we’ll continue to refine some parts of your game that you’re going to need to for the NBA for the next level.”

Kings Power Forward Thomas Robinson

“I just want to thank everybody for coming. I’m pretty happy to be a part of the Kings organization now. I’m excited to get out here to start working and get ready for the season. I’ve heard a lot about the fans. They’re pretty similar to Kansas, so I’m looking forward to that also. I just can’t wait to be on the floor.”

How would you characterize your emotions when you were selected at No. 5?

“I was the fifth pick to a great organization so I wasn’t mad at all. The whole thing about me going earlier, I really didn’t have any expectations. I didn’t really care too much where I landed in the draft, as long as I was picked up. And I came into a good situation so I’m happy about it.”

How would you explain why you chose to wear jersey No. 0?

“I’m going to be starting another chapter. I want to build my respect level all the way back up. I was highly respected at the college level. But that’s over with now, so I have to start over in the League.”

What would like to say to your college coach, Bill Self?

“Thank you. Thank you for staying tough on me. He rode me the whole way through this process and he kept me humble and definitely built me stronger, as far as mentally.”

Have you talked to DeMarcus Cousins?

“I spoke to him the night of the Draft. He contacted me right after I got picked up. The talk was mainly just, ‘I can’t wait to see you and get in the gym and start working.’”

How do you think your games blend together?

“I think he’s produced at a tremendous level, especially his second year. And with me coming in, bringing what I can to the table, it should help him. Hopefully, him knowing what he knows by being in the League for a couple of years should rub off on me.”

How high of a ceiling do you think you have as an NBA prospect?

“I think it’s still high. I think I’m nowhere near finished as a player. I don’t do anything perfectly outside of rebounding (laughs). There is a list of other things I still could be great at that I’m just good at right now. I’m only 21 years old, so I have a long time to keep playing.”

What kind of feedback have you received from Kings fans since you were drafted?

“They’ve been great. My Twitter timeline, Instagram – everything has been blowing up. I feel like I’m at Kansas, which is a great feeling. Our fans were truly loyal there, and I’m getting that same vibe here.”

What was the main reason for your improvement between your sophomore and junior year?

“I think because I sat behind the (Morris) twins was the reason I had so much improvement. One thing about the Kansas program is that we treat each other like brothers. I played the same position, but they weren’t treating me as if I was competing against them. They were teaching me the whole time they were there. And when they left, I had all the knowledge going against lottery picks from the past few years, so when it was my time, I was ready.”

What do you think will be the hardest part about the transition from college to the NBA?

“Just learning how to be a pro. The pace of the game is different. I have to know when to attack and when not to attack. There are a lot of things that come with (the NBA), so there is a lot I have to learn.”

Are there any current or former players to whom you’d compare your game?

“I try not to compare to just one person. There are multiple players I try to take things from.”

Who are a few of those players?

“Kevin Garnett, attitude wise, and the passion he’s played with his whole career. Amaré Stoudemire, when he first came into the League. LaMarcus Aldridge, Tyson Chandler – I watch tape on guys like them.”
